About ECAR and Emmanuel College
The Emmanuel College Artist-in-Residence Program (ECAR) was established to connect practicing artists with the Emmanuel College community and to bring contemporary studio practice into the heart of campus life. Each summer, the program welcomes four artists for a six-week residency in Ceramics, Photography, Printmaking, and Social Practice, reflecting Emmanuel’s commitment to both traditional and experimental approaches to art making.
Resident artists are provided with studio space, access to the College’s art facilities, housing, and a stipend. In return, they share their process and perspectives through lectures, workshops, and collaboration with students and faculty. The residency concludes with a public exhibition and the donation of a completed artwork to the College’s permanent collection, creating a lasting legacy of creative exchange.
Since its inception in 2010, ECAR has hosted 48 artists from around the world, enriching the College’s artistic community and offering students meaningful opportunities to engage directly with working professionals. The program continues to foster experimentation, mentorship, and collaboration, affirming Emmanuel College’s dedication to supporting artists and nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers.
Founded in 1919, Emmanuel College is a Catholic, coeducational, residential, liberal arts and sciences college situated on 17 acres in the City of Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. The college’s campus is at the prime intersection of education, science, culture, business, medicine and technology, giving students direct access to world-class research, learning and experiential opportunities; 100% of students complete at least one career-igniting internship before graduation. The Emmanuel community is located in a part of the city simply pulsing with activity – arts, athletics, dining, recreation, music and more.
Emmanuel’s 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students cultivate a strong intellectual, ethical and intellectual foundation as they contribute to a close-knit community and engage in extraordinary opportunities for learning and growth. Across five academic schools and more than 70 majors, minors and concentrations, faculty provide students with unwavering support and collaborate with them on original research and scholarship. At the heart of the Emmanuel College community is a commitment to social justice rooted in the founding vision of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, who believe that “education is the greatest work on Earth.”
